PURPOSE:To obtain freely linear polarization, right circular polarization and left circular polarization, by laminating a linear polarization layer, a 90 deg.-twisted nematic liquid crystal layer and a homogeneous oriented nematic liquid crystal layer and applying the voltage independently to each liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A 90 deg.-twisted nematic liquid crystal 10 having positive dielectric anisotropy is held in a space divided with a spacer 9 of glass plates 5 and 6 having transparent electrodes 3 and 4 containing oriented films 7 and 8 of the +X and +Y directions on the inner surface, respectively. A linear polarizing plate 1 is laminated at the outside of the glass plate 5. Then a homogeneous orientation nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy is held in a space divided with a spacer 16 of the glass plates 6 and 15 containing transparent electrodes 11 and 12 as well as oriented films 13 and 14 having 45 deg. inclination toward the direction Y from the axis within the X and Y faces. Voltage is applied independently to each liquid crystal layer. Thus an incident light 17 is changed to horizontal linear polarization, vertical linear polarization, right circular polarization and left circular polarization respectively. |
