The IC engine has a main inlet channel(11) with an inlet valve(12), & an auxiliary inlet channel(16) opening into the main channel near the inlet aperture. A control valve(14) in the main inlet channel is closed when engine load is light, so that the mixture flows at a high speed through the auxiliary channel into the combustion chamber(7). The engine has a control device changing the instant at which peak press. is produced in the combustion chamber, & a device connecting the control valve and the control device so that it is operated when the control valve is closed, thus delaying the instant of peak press.
