The compd. (I) was obtained in 92.3% yield by treating 2-hydrazino-4-methylbenzothiazole with excess HCO2H. The residual HCO2H was removed by azeotropic distn. with PhMe, and I was crystd. Thus, a mixt. of 2-hydrazino-4-methylbenzothiazole, 98% formic acid and recovered 78% formic acid was refluxed for 2 hr at 110≦̸C and distilled to recover formic acid and to give tricycleazole(yield 92.3%).
