<p>The device comprises a databus (2), which connects a microprocessor (1), a main memory (5), a program memory (6), an input interface (3), an output interface (4) and a monitoring circuit (7) to one another. The two said interfaces have a limited number of inputs (10) and outputs (11), respectively. To create the possibility of increasing the number of said inputs and outputs, the databus (2) is connected to a multiple connector (12) via a bus interface (8). The said multiple connector is connected to an extension device (13) which exhibits a databus (14) which connects a decoding circuit (18), an input interface (16) and an output interface (17) to one another. The two interfaces of the extension device operate in conjunction with the main and system memory and the microprocessor via the two said databuses (2, 14), the same system software being used. It is only necessary to supplement the program stored in the program memory with the additional functions which are controlled via the interfaces of the extension device.
