The invention provides a method for the elimination of internal cavities in superplastically deformed or superplastically deforming components. Use is made of a workpiece made from a material capable of being deformed superplastically. This workpiece is inserted into a die, in particular opposite a forming surface. The workpiece is heated to the superplastic forming temperature and both sides of the workpiece are subjected to pressure. This pressure is sufficient to prevent the formation of cavities and pores. The pressure on the side of the die furthest away from the forming surface is then increased, deforming the material superplastically and causing it to bear against the forming surface. In a second embodiment, pressurisation is performed after the workpiece has been formed, either by maintaining the pressure and compressing the material between the forming pressure and the reaction force of the die or by pressurizing both sides of the component with a pressure medium, in which case the cavities are eliminated by a process of plastic deformation and diffusion.
