The invention relates to a method of parting solid articles of brittle material, for example glass. The article is first of all scored with a glass cutter at the location where it is to be parted, which lies unsymmetrically, and is then parted by thermal stresses along the notch line. In order that the thermal stresses are generated approximately symmetrically with respect to the parting plane, various measures known per se are proposed.
