An electrooptical modulator consists of a reflector having a reflecting flexible diaphragm, e.g. made from metallised electret foil, which is supported in matrix fashion and has therebetween non-supported areas which can be deflected into a configuration, which reflects the incident radiation in a scattered manner, by generating an electrostatic field in time with a modulation signal, with the result that the intensity of the reflected bundle of radiation is modulated. The reflector is preferably arranged in a parallel optical beam path together with filters or diaphragms which intercept radiation reflected in a scattered fashion. The modulator is suitable in principle for optical radiation of any wavelength, as well as for radiation in the submillimetre range, can be designed with a large area, and can be operated at a high modulation frequency or high bit rates and with a high modulation efficiency.
