In a web-fed rotary printing machine having two forme cylinders (5, 6) and two rubber-covered cylinders (7, 8) per printing unit (1 to 4), with which selectively one or two printing carrier webs (19, 20) can be printed simultaneously, means are provided for the circumferential register adjustment (25, 26, 29, 30), with which means the first lines of print of the forme cylinders of two printing units (1, 2) can selectively be moved into congruence or offset relative to one another at least by the width of the cylinder gaps. In order to avoid ghosting and creasing in this machine during uninterrupted printing on two printing carrier webs (19, 20), the two printing carrier webs (19, 20) can be guided separately through the machine in each case between a forme cylinder (5 or 6) and the associated rubber-covered cylinder (7 or 8) acting as the impression cylinder. In this case, the rubber-covered cylinders (7, 8) are raised from one another. <IMAGE>
