Process and appliance for harnessing and discharging the decomposition gases formed in waste tips. The gases are drawn off through the off-take holes sunk into the tip which has been dumped in layers. In order to facilitate the flow of the decomposition gases to the holes, there are provided, as the tip is built up, networks of trenches filled with gravel ballast in the fill layers. The appliance for carrying out the process has a gas off-take hole arrangement, which is surrounded by a gravel bed, is sunk into a bore hole in the tip, and has a gas collection pipe which is made from a filter pipe and is provided with transverse bulkheads in accordance with the fill layers. Arranged in the gas collection pipe there are intake pipes of various length which pass through the transverse bulkheads in a gas-tight manner and each open into one of the zones, partitioned by bulkheads, of the gas collection pipe and there draw off the decomposition gas which enters said zone partitioned off by bulkheads from the surrounding fill layer. The intake pipes open into a common gas plenum which can be connected to an exhaust appliance. By means of shut-off elements in the intake pipes, the individual sections, partitioned by bulkheads, of the gas collection pipe, and thus the surrounding fill layers, may optionally be connected to the gas plenum.
