PURPOSE:To efficiently code a facsimile signal having high resolution, by setting a basic picture element and a supplementary picture element at each other predetermined picture element number in the direction of scanning line and coding the supplementary picture element according to the state of the basic picture element. CONSTITUTION:Picture elements are separated into basic picture element and supplementary picture elements at each other element toward the scanning line. Next, the coding for the basic picture elements only is performed and then that for the supplementary picture elements is performed. There are two kinds in handling the supplementary picture elements; one is for the supplementary picture elements clipped with basic picture a element with different polarity and the supplementary picture elements are coded as picture signals. The other is the supplementary picture elements clipped with the basic picture elements of the same polarity. In this case, the elements are sequentially connected through the forecast as the same polarity as the basic picture elements. As a result, the types of run length of the connected basic picture elements are decreased and the sampling density can be unchanged as usual even to a facsimile signal having high resolution. |
