A hygienic device for toilets is specified, in particular for public toilets in the form of WCs which have a toilet bowl with a seat surface. The hygienic device (10) is arranged with spacing above a toilet bowl (12) and consists essentially of a hygienic additional seat (22) which can be extended from a housing (20) into a position above the normal seat surface (18). Provided in the housing (20) is a disinfecting apparatus (38, 40, 46) which disinfects the additional seat (22) before it is extended in each case so that, when the release (42) is actuated, firstly the disinfecting operation proceeds and then the additional seat (22) is extended from the housing (20). Furthermore, a return apparatus (54) is provided for the additional seat (22), which apparatus ensures automatic retraction of the additional seat (22) into the housing (20) when the additional seat (22) is no longer loaded by the weight of the user. The additional seat (22) itself consists of self-supporting plastic with a smooth, non-porous surface, the material being unaffected by disinfectants. A hygienic device of this type for toilets is a guarantee to the user that there is absolutely no risk of infection; additionally, the otherwise prevalent aversion to public toilets is thus diminished to a great extent. <IMAGE>
