The invention relates to an instrument for heating, melting and modelling thermoplastic materials. The instrument is intended in particular for modelling wax such as is required in dental technology. To make possible pulsed operation with rapid heating and rapid cooling, a semiconductor element, preferably silicon, is proposed as heating element, which is operated according to the "spreading resistance" principle. For transmitting heat to the place to be modelled, a metallic melt tip is proposed which is provided with a coating, for example of Teflon, in order to influence the cooling-time constant. <IMAGE>
