A current/flow comparator generates an alarm signal whenever the instantaneous flow rate of coolant liquid cooling the armature of a dynamoelectric machine falls below a predetermined percentage of a desired instantaneous flow rate. The desired instantaneous flow rate varies as the square of the actual instantaneous current flowing through the armature. The comparator has a circuit generating a first signal representative of the actual instantaneous value of the flow rate.
