The generator is for driving electrical loads with variable impedance characteristics, such as ion conduction lamps which have a relatively high ignition or starting impedance and a considerably lower operating impedance. The power supply to the lamp is proportional to the impedance and this causes considerable energy saving. The internal impedance of the generator incorporates a transistor and a coil (42, 46) to make is comparable with the load impedance during the starting process. A capacitive component cones into operation when the impedance of the load changes so that the internal impedance of the generator will become comparable. The starting voltage across the load is relatively high and is effectively switched off during the running operation. |
