A starting device for internal-combustion engines is proposed, which is provided with an intermediate gear (back-gearing arrangement, back gear, reduction gear, transmission gear, countershaft, connecting gear) between a starter motor and a meshing drive with a starting pinion. The intermediate gear (6, 9, 30) is accommodated in a chamber (33) which is surrounded towards the meshing drive (15, 17, 19) by an intermediate bearing (11) which is arranged on the housing (2) of the starter motor (1), and is surrounded towards the interior of the housing (2) by a covering disk (31). Since the covering disk (31) must have a large passage (through opening) (32) corresponding to that part (6) of the intermediate gear which is attached to the drive part (4), a sealing device (36, 37) is provided for sealing the chamber (33) against dust in the housing (2), which dust is produced by brush wear, attacks the bearings (8; 28) and obstructs tooth rolling contact. Said sealing device (36, 37) surrounds the driveshaft (4) and forms a labyrinth seal together with an attachment (34) on the covering disk (31). <IMAGE>
