Gasification of carbonaceous materials

The invention provides a process for the gasification of carbonaceous materials comprising the steps of blowing an oxidising gas at the upper surface of a ferrous melt in a container by means of an overhead lance; injecting a stirring gas directly into the melt below the level of the melt; and introducing carbonaceous material into the melt whereby a reducing gas is produced therefrom; and extracting the reducing gas so produced from the container.
