PAPERBAG HAVING ARTICULATED HANDLE

A web of bag forming material is converted into roll stock suitable for use in manufacturing a bag having handles, the roll stock being subsequently formed to provide a bag having a reinforced handle. The roll stock consists of a plurality of bag forming portions serially connected to one another to form an elongated web. Each bag forming portion consists of a plurality of wall forming panels connectable to form a bag which is closed at one end. The wall forming panels include side wall forming panels having a marginal edge portion which includes a pair of handle forming portions arranged to be disposed opposite one another when a bag is formed. Portions of the marginal edge portions are severed from the side wall forming panels along lines which extend outwardly from each side of the handle to form a pair of elongated flaps, the elongated flaps being folded along their connection with the handle forming portions to extend in an overlying relationship with respect to the side wall panels and being secured in the overlying relationship to form a reinforced connection between the handle forming portions and the side wall panels of the bag. The bag comprises a plurality of side walls which include a pair of handle forming portions disposed opposite one another and having elongated flaps extending downwardly from each end of each handle portion and being secured in an overlying relationship with respect to the side wall panel in which the handle is located. The method of forming the bag includes the steps of cutting the web on opposite sides of the handle to form a pair of elongated flaps which are connected to each handle forming portion and extend laterally therefrom. The elongated flaps are then folded along their connection with the handle forming portion to extend downwardly into an overlying relationship with respect to the side wall panels. The elongated flaps being secured to the side wall panels to form reinforcements for the handle.
