PURPOSE:To obtain an alkane polyol, especially ethylene glycol, in a relatively low-pressure condition in high yield, by reacting CO with H2 under heating and pressure using a highly active catalyst comprising a ruthenium compound and an imidazole. CONSTITUTION:CO is reacted with H2 under heating (at 50-350 deg.C, preferably 150-300 deg.C) under pressure (at 2,000-1kg/cm<2>-G, preferably 1,000-50kg/ cm<2>-G), to give an alkane polyol. In the reaction, a catalyst comprising a ruthenium compound (e.g., ruthenium chloride, ruthenium acetate, etc.) and an imidazole[e.g., a compound(e.g., imidazole, N-methylimidazole, etc.) shown by the formula(R<1>-R<4> are H, or hydrocarbon; R<3> and R<4> may form a bifunctional hydrocarbon ring). The concentration of the ruthenium compound is 2X10<-1>- 10<-4>g atom/l calculated as Ru atom, and the concentration of the imidazole is 1-10<-4>mol/l. |
