Glaucoma or high intraocular pressure is treated by the topical ocular application of a 3-aryloxy-2-hydroxypropylamine of the formula - Ar-O-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-NH-Y-(COOR)x (I) % or its salts:- (where Y is opt. branched (1-10C) carbon chain or (8-20C) aralkyl (sic), R is lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, aryl or aralkyl; x is 1, 2 or 3, provided that when x is 2 or 3, COOR may be same or different; Ar is aromatic opt. substd. by lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, lower alkoxy, halogen, acetamido, amino, nitro, lower alkylamino, OH, lower hydroxyalkyl, acetyl, CN or ROCO.A-; A is a bond, (1-10C) alkylene or (2-10C) alkenylene). (I) have sustained antiglaucoma activity when in the eye, but are short lived on reaching the general circulation. Side effects are thus much reduced as compared with the usual beta-blockers used for treating glaucoma. Examples of tests for the effects of (I) on the eyes of rabbits are given in the specification, but no results. |
