Process for the preparation ofα,β-ethylenically unsaturated isobutyric acid derivatives

Isobutyric acid or a functional equivalent, e.g. a lower alkyl ester, is oxidatively dehydrogenated in the vapour phase to yield the corresponding unsaturated derivative with anα,βdouble bond by contact with a heterogeneous catalyst in the presence of molecular oxygen. The catalyst comprises calcined iron phosphates which contain silver, cobalt, lanthanum or tellurium as the modifying component.
