The rate of combustion is increased and combustion conditions are enhanced by a spark ignition internal combustion engine system 10 involving creating a relatively rapid swirling of a charge 32 of air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of the system and igniting the mixture with an arc of extended duration that continues to ignite new portions of the swirling mixture during revolution of the swirling charge.
