Adsorptive, protein-binding aluminium oxyhydroxide is prepared by mixing an aqueous suspension of carbonate-free, highly hydrated, aluminium oxyhydroxide with a water soluble additive that provides coordinating moieties with the aluminium compound and drying the resultant mixture. The protein-binding aluminium oxyhydroxides can be made re-suspendable by acidifying to a pH from 4 to 6.5, the acidification being effected either before or after drying.
