A pipe coupling suitable plastics and metal gas pipes comprises a shell (11) having a portion (12) which is deformable radially inwardly by the application of hydraulic pressure to compress a gasket (15) and lock ring (28) into engagement with the pipe (23). The lock ring (28) has sharp teeth (34), and a recessed (36) periphery in which is received a protuberance (38) of the deformable shell (12). Permanent deformation of the protuberance (38) during installation of the coupling caused the teeth (34) to grip the pipe, and if tensile load is subsequently applied to the pipes, e.g. due to thermal effects, a ramp surface of the recess (36) engages the protuberance and thereby forces the teeth (34) into a tighter grip on the pipe section.
