In a work chair, preferably an office chair, in which the inclination of the seat plate and, independently thereof, of the backrest support can be adjusted, the swivel axle is located between the seat support and the seat plate for the inclination adjustment of the seat plate near to the front end of the seat plate and the gas spring for the inclination adjustment of the seat plate engages on the seat plate in its rear region. The arresting of the gas pressure spring for the inclination adjustment of the seat plate can advantageously be switched off permanently so that the seat plate can then swing freely about its front edge. <IMAGE>
