<p>The heat remaining in steel strip emerging from a continuous annealing furnace is used to heat up the ingoing strip. The time for heat exchange is lengthened by threading the strips close together in a looping tower, which is divided into compartment by vertical walls alternately from floor and roof. Fans or blowers circulate an inert or reducing gas through the compartments in order to promote transfer of heat by radiation and convection. The heat requirements of the soaking zone of the furnace can be reduced by 50% or more.</p> |
