1291321 Floating barriers BENNETT POLLUTION CONTROLS Ltd 1 June 1970 [5 June 1969]. 26336/70 Heading E1H A boom 11 to control floating oil has overlapping sections 12, 13 joined by U-bolts 36, each section comprising at least one layer 23 of hydrophobic oleophilic filtering material enveloping a net supported by floatation units 16 and preferably made of steel cables or polypropylene ropes 18, 19. Said layer allows water but not oil to pass therethrough and may comprise woven or non-woven fibres of a polyolefin such as polypropylene, polyethylene or ethylene-butene. A water and oil impermeable film 24 may cover the exposed portions of said layer. The upper portion of the net may be stiffened by chain-link fencing-material 22. Each of the units 16 may include a cylinder 26 made of a waterproof-plastics material and filled with foamed polystyrene particles 27, which are retained by a net 28 in the event of the cylinder being ruptured. Each cylinder may be replaced by a plurality of spheres or cubes. If necessary, the net is ballasted to keep it vertical.
