Phthalamic and nicotinic acids and their salts having a plant growth-regulatory action

The phthalamic and nicotinic acids of the formula: <IMAGE> and their alkali metal, amine and ammonium salts have a plant growth-regulatory action. In the formula I, R, R1 and R2 have the meanings given in Patent Claim 1. The phthalamic acids of the formula I (R1 = carbon) can be prepared by reacting aminopyridines with phthalic anhydride in chloroform. The nicotinic acids of the formula I can be prepared by reacting anilines or aminochloropyridines with 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic anhydride in chloroform. The acids of the formula I can be converted in a known manner into their esters or salts.
