A rod for electric arc welding has a metallic core of elongated rectangular or elliptical cross-section, with minor dimension considerably less than the major. The core is surrounded by a flux sheath of similar form. Alternatively two circular rods may be enclosed side by side in a figure of eight flux sheath. The rod is used for butt welding sheet material, with its major dimension perpendicular to the facing edges, and the direction of movement when depositing the weld bead. A gap is left between the sheet edges, before welding, wider than the major dimension of the rod. This electrode is suitable for use with thin sheet material, producing a weld free from holes, without burning the edges of the sheet.
|
