The invention is based on a method for regulating the output voltage of a mechanically driven electric DC generator, such as a dynamo machine or an alternator having a rectifier for charging at least one accumulator battery which is connected to an electrical load network as a buffer and is supplied with electrical power from the generator. It is distinguished in that a comparator (13) monitors the voltage at the terminals of the battery (1) and initiates the complete interruption of the energising circuit (7) of the generator if the battery voltage reaches an upper threshold value which corresponds essentially to the normal maximum charge voltage of the battery, and makes the energising circuit (7) of the generator (5) again once the terminal voltage of the battery (1) has fallen essentially to its nominal value again. The invention helps to reduce the losses and heating of DC generators which are connected to a buffering battery. <IMAGE>
