A data-processing device consists of a multiplicity of modules, each of which contains a subgroup of processing elements. Within each module, the connections to at least two of the elements at an edge of the subgroup share a set of external connections with the connections to the same number of elements on an adjacent edge of the subgroup. If, for example, each subgroup contains 4 x 4 elements, the four elements along the north edge can share the same four external connections (12) with the four elements along the west edge, so that the number of necessary external connections is reduced from sixteen to twelve.
