The invention relates to a flexible supporting element in the form of a strap, a rope or the like, in particular for lifting or securing loads. A strap of this type has an inlay part absorbing the tensile stress and made of a textile material and a protective sheath intended for the inlay part and made of plastic, rubber or the like. The protective sheath is mostly subjected to very high notching or cutting stresses, in particular if large, sharp-edged loads have to be transported. There is therefore considerable risk of damage to the protective sheath and thus also to the inlay part of textile material determining the carrying capacity. According to the invention, therefore, a multiplicity of small reinforcing bodies are to be embedded in the protective sheath. The cutting resistance of the reinforcing bodies is a multiple of the cutting resistance of the protective-sheath material. Here, the protective sheath can loosely surround the inlay part or else be applied as a fixed component in the form of a coating. The reinforcing bodies prevent the protective sheath from being destroyed down to the inlay part by sharp-edged loads, pinching or the like. <IMAGE>
