PCl3 is combined with from 0.1 to 0.999 times the molar amount of chlorine, from 1 to 90 % of the added amount of PCl3 is distilled off simultaneously or afterwards, and a crystal slurry having the molar ratio PCl5 : PCl3 of from 1 : 1 to 999 : 1 is obtained. This crystalline slurry is reacted in a further stage at 0-150 DEG C with an excess of chlorine to give pure, pulverulent PCl5.
