A special sail for a windsurfing board which is designed and arranged in such a way that the sail area can be reduced on the water so that the user, if he becomes exhausted or if the wind strength increases beyond his ability, can start sailing again with substantially reduced sail area (the smaller sail area facilitates the start), can continue sailing and can still reach his starting point or destination instead of drifting helplessly with his windsurfing board on the water and as a result getting into a perilous situation in the extreme case or posing a hazard to shipping. The sail is attached in a vertically adjustable manner to a separate sail holder which is designed as a sliding device and sits on the mast pocket, specifically with its luff by means of a weatherstrip so that the sail can be lowered relative to the mast, the sail area presented as working area to the wind being reduced owing to the fact that the lower part of the sail, which has come with its luff out of the sliding device, is now removed by being pulled out of its holder at the foot of the base sail, which holder is likewise designed as a sliding device. Provided for the removed foot part is a special quiver-like pocket which is attached in the lower area of the mast pocket and receives the foot part.
