In the case of a polariser, the polarisation change of electromagnetic waves in waveguides or waveguide emitters, preferably the conversion of linear polarisation into circular polarisation and vice versa, is produced by deforming the waveguide cross-section. In order to achieve a reproducibly highly accurate deformation of the waveguide cross-section irrespective of fluctuations in the waveguide material properties and/or diameter in a manner which is as simple and cost-saving as possible, the waveguide is surrounded by a collar whose material is harder than that of the waveguide, and whose inner surface, which is constructed to correspond to it, is pressed against the waveguide outer surface in such a manner that the intended change in the waveguide cross-section is produced. In the case of a particularly simple configuration, which can be used with sufficient accuracy in most practical applications, for pinching circular waveguides, the inner surfaces of the collar form a rectangle in the cross-section, at least in the pinching region, the longer sides of which rectangle correspond to the external diameter of the circular waveguide.
