PURPOSE:To obtain white or black display and color display by stacking the 1st and 2nd liquid-crystal layers which each have nematic liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy between electrode substrates, and arranging two polarizers at specific positions on their external surfaces. CONSTITUTION:The 1st and 2nd liquid-crystal layers A and B which have nematic liquid crystal 8 with positive dielectric anisotropy, oriented with long-axis directions of liquid-crystal molecules twisted spirally at 90 deg., between electrode substrates 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 each having a transparent electrode 7 formed on their facing surfaces are laminated in such a way that the spiral structures of liquid-crystal molecules of the liquid-crystal layers A and B are linked successively by either ordinary or extraordinary rays and twisted at 90 deg.. Then, an electric field is applied to the liquid-crystal layer A or B to perform color display, and the electric field is applied to both the layers A and B to perform black display by a neutral polarizing plate. |
