The invention relates to a system for generating energy by means of water flowing from a higher level to a lower level, which consists of a reservoir which holds water available above the lower level and has a blockable pressure line which originates at the floor of the container and pressurises a turbine, for example. In order, on the one hand, to render the system independent of the tide and, on the other hand, to achieve higher pressures upstream of the turbine, the reservoir, of which a plurality can be assigned to one turbine, is formed from two continuous containers which are arranged concentrically one above the other and of which the lower one has a substantially smaller diameter than the upper container. Pistons are assigned to the two containers and are connected to one another via a piston rod. The upper piston is constructed as a float, and the upper container has in the lower region at least one sealable opening, while the subregion, situated below the piston, of the lower container has at least one sealable balancing opening. One configuration can provide for ballast water to be added onto the upper piston, which is designed as a float/working piston combination and is provided with sealable balancing openings. <IMAGE>
