A device for preheating the intake pipe of a naturally aspirated internal combustion engine with applied ignition has an electrically heated heating surface carrier (10) connected to the intake pipe wall, from which carrier heating surfaces (26, 27, 28), which extend into the intake pipe, proceed in order to increase the total heating surface. The heating surfaces (26, 27, 28) are of basket-shaped design, are composed of a wire mesh and on their edge (at 20 or 21 or 22) have a heat-conducting connection to the heating surface carrier (10). By means of such a design of the above mentioned device the advantages of large heat exchanger surfaces and hence a correspondingly large heat transfer surface are obtained, and in addition, due to the interchangeability and versatile dimensioning of the basket-shaped heating surfaces, an outstanding adaptability of the intake pipe preheating device to the different conditions inside the intake pipe, such as, for example, modified flow conditions, variation of the throttle resistance, etc. <IMAGE>
