The invention relates to a swirl chamber diesel internal combustion engine with sub-divided combustion chamber located partially in the cylinder (16), partially in the cylinder head, in which the fuel is injected by an injection nozzle (3) into a swirl chamber (13, 15) arranged in the cylinder head, which chamber is connected to the cylinder via at least one port (6) opening out closer to the cylinder circumferential surface than to the cylinder axis, a directed movement of air being produced in the swirl chamber by the compression sequence and the fuel injection occurring in this air swirl. In order to create a diesel internal combustion engine of this type with improved characteristics it is proposed that the swirl chamber be designed as a squish chamber (13, 15) which has a cross sectional constriction (14), arranged with centre area, from which it widens in cross section on both sides both towards the injection nozzle (3) as part of the swirl chamber (13) and towards the port (6) as part of the swirl chamber (15). In this way improved cold starting characteristics, exhaust gas emissions and reduced fuel consumption are achieved. <IMAGE>
