Title compds. I (R1 = H, 1-hydroxy lower alkyl; R2 = 1-hydroxy lower alkyl), useful antiseptics for dairy products, cosmetics, gums, etc., were prepd. by the reaction of 5-(4-hydroxy phenyl)hydantoin (II) and aldehyde (III, R3 = H, Me, Et). Thus, a mixt. of 10.2 g II and 3.53 g paraformaldehyde was adjusted to pH 6 with acetic acid, stirred for 4 hr at 70≦̸C, distilled under the reduced pressure and recrystallized with acetone and benzene to give 18.7 g 5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxymethylhydantoin (m.p. 142-144≦̸C).
