In one embodiment detailed a stored program controlled processor including a memory map store suitable for finding a path through an eight stage network initially controls a four stage crossbar network which will eventually be incorporated into the first two and last two stages of an eight stage network. The path selection is performed as for an eight stage network except that a masking arrangement restricts choice to fixed paths through the not yet provided stages, these paths corresponding to connector equipped cables linking the two pairs of cables of the four stage network, the latter being provided with circuits to give simulated response and check signals for the not yet provided stages. Reed relay switches may be used. A time space time TDM arrangement is also detailed. A plurality of different size networks may be controlled by a single control unit.
