PURPOSE:To reduce the weight of a propeller shaft and heighten its strength, natural frequency and revolution speed, by combining a tube made of fiber-reinforced plastic, with a splined section provided by the plastic deformation of hollow members. CONSTITUTION:A tube 4 is made of fiber-reinforced plastic. A male and a female splines 6, 5 are manufactured by the plastic deformation of hollow members. The member having the female spline 5 is secured in the tube 4. The male spline 6 is engaged with the female spline 5. A dustproof cover 9 is mounted around the splines. Since the specific gravity of the tube 4 is low, the weight is reduced to heighten the natural frequency. The strength of the tube 4 can be made nearly equal to that of a steel-made one. Since the members having the splines 5, 6 are hollow, the weight is low and the flexural rigidity is high. |
