The winding apparatus for web-like material possesses, for the production of winding rolls without a winding core, a winding cage (2) consisting of driven winding members (3) which are arranged externally on a cylindrical enveloping surface which defines the winding axis (5) and winding diameter and in which they bear on the roll circumference of the winding roll and drive the winding roll. Provided axially on each of the two sides, outside the winding width required for the winding roll, but still in the winding cage (2), is in each case a winding mandrel (12) which is coaxial with the winding axis (5) and which can be driven about its axis in the winding direction independently of the winding members (3). Furthermore, the mandrels (12) are provided on the outside with thread flights (12.2) which, with their thread direction, result in an axial displacement of the winding mandrels (12) towards the middle of the winding cage (2), when the winding mandrels bearing on the winding members (3) have on the contact surfaces a higher circumferential speed than the winding members (3). Finally, the mandrels (12) can each be supported axially, outside the winding cage (2), on a traveller (16) which can follow displacements of the winding axis (5) in a plane perpendicular to the winding axis. During the winding operation, the mandrels (12) screw themselves into the innermost turn of the winding roll and thereby also drive from inside the winding roll which consequently cannot come loose by itself. <IMAGE>
