The method for the treatment of a liquid, particularly waste waters (13), comprises the steps of supplying said liquid through an inlet (19) to a basin (1, 22) and allowing it to flow out through an outlet (18). In order to provide for a separation respectively a settling of the heavier mineral suspensions from the lighter organic suspensions, the waste waters (13) in the basin (1, 22) are subjected to a horizontal direction stream (16); said stream is substantially independent from the inlets (19) and the outlets (18) of the waste waters (13), and is substantially poor in turbulences at the surface (14) of the waste waters (13).
