In a clamping device for pre-loading the side rods (16, 17) and the crosshead (18) connected to them, a clamping arrangement (40) which acts on the crosshead (18) is provided between the two side rods (16, 17), the clamping arrangement (40) comprising an expanding device, such as a piston, which can apply increasing clamping forces to the side rods (16, 17) and the crosshead (18) so that they can be pre-loaded to a predetermined value. The clamping device can be equipped with a pressure plate (41) between the clamping arrangement (40) and the crosshead (18) in order to ensure a uniform pressure distribution over the entire crosshead. <IMAGE>
