The invention relates to a process for preparing tetracyanoethylene. For this, at least one hydrocarbon is reacted with at least one pseudohalogen or one cyanide at a temperature of a magnitude which can be pre-set. The reaction process is assisted by at least one catalyst. An unsaturated hydrocarbon, in particular acetylene, is preferably used as the hydrocarbon. Dicyanogen is used as the pseudohalogen. In the preparation of tetracyanoethylene from hydrocarbon and cyanide, the acetylene is preferably passed into a catalyst solution which contains divalent copper cyanide.
