In internal combustion engines large energy losses occur due to waste heat, only a fraction of the waste heat having a high temperature. The object of the invention is achieved according to the size of an internal combustion engine by measures as described under section "a" or section "a and b". a) Improvement of the efficiency by an increase of the heat potential of the working process gases inside a working process chamber by a reduction of the temperature differentials between hot working process gases and the inner surface of the working process chamber by means of a reduction of the heat transfer per unit area through a wall of the working process chamber, for example by means of thermal insulation, a piston moving free of contact in the working process chamber, which piston is guided and sealed in an area adjacent to the working process chamber, which has a relatively low operating temperature. b) Use of the larger quantity of waste heat in the exhaust gases as a result of measure a) for additional energy conversion.
