Antitheft devices for motor vehicles have hitherto been alarm systems which emit an alarm signal for a limited period or have been steering wheel locks which lock the steering wheel in a certain position using a bolt and prevent rotary movement of the steering wheel. In order to produce an antitheft device which is on the one hand very cost effective and has a simple structure, and on the other hand can be retrofitted to all motor vehicles and finally guarantees maximum security, it is proposed to weld a casing to the transmission tunnel inside the motor vehicle, to provide a manually displaceable safety bolt in said casing and to design it in such a way that the end of the safety bolt, which projects into the transmission tunnel, in the locked position locks the gear lever inside the transmission tunnel, the safety bolt interacting with a lock.
