A document press device is described in which a document press plate to press a document onto a document support surface is subjected by an elastic element to an elastic force in the pressing direction, when it presses the document, and in which an elastic force is exerted on the document press plate on opening, so that the document press plate is held in an open, self-supporting state. The document press device is furthermore provided with an opening and closing mechanism, which is able to pivot the document press plate further in the opening direction out of its open, self-supporting position and to push it down until it lies essentially parallel to the document support surface, so that in this manner a large document can be applied against the document support surface. <IMAGE>
