Process for the preparation of 5,11-dihydro-6H-pyrido[2,3-b]- [1,4]benzodiazepin-6-ones

A novel process is described for the preparation of 5,11-dihydro-6H-pyrido[2,3-b]-[1,4]benzodiazepin-6-ones by reacting a 2-halo-3-aminopyridine with an anthranilic acid ester and subsequent ring closure of the resulting 2-halo-3-(2-aminobenzoyl)aminopyridine. These compounds are starting substances for the preparation of pharmacologically useful derivatives, for example of pirenzepine.
