The invention concerns a process for producing a decorative sheet material (laminate, layered product) by securing a decor (decorative, ornamental) layer (2), which consists of at least one dyed or printed paper or fabric web, to a support (1) by pressing with a structured (textured) plate (10) which at the same time presses relieflike shapes into the surface of the sheet material, producing regions of high and low densification. Prior to pressing, at least one dye encapsulated (embedded) in microcapsules (40) is disposed at least in the regions of high densification. On pressing the dye is liberated from the microcapsules (40) and is permanently visualised (visibilised) by means of a developer (30). In the ready-produced sheet material the colour in the regions of high densification is due to the dye liberated from the microcapsules (40). The colour in the other regions of the sheet material is due to the decor layer (2). <IMAGE>
